Question about no data returned from a Disk connector.

We are using a disk connector passing the key and reading the database.  If we pass a key that doesn't exist in the database the connector simple stops.  Is there some way to set the connector to return an exception?

For now I have added shapes to set a Dynamic Process Property to 'N' then do a branch, read the database, if it finds data then I set the Dynamic Process Property to 'Y' and Cache the data.  The second part of the branch then checks to see if the data was found and if so it loads the data from cache and the processing continues. I have attached a sample picture of what we are trying to do.

This seems like a lot of work to do just to make sure that data was read.  Is there an easier way?
